Description
The Gatehouse to Ty Mawr is a Grade II* listed building made of red handmade brick, featuring a steeply-pitched cross-gabled stone slate roof that gives it a jewel-like appearance. It has a square single-cell plan and stands two storeys tall, with the lower storey entirely taken up by a very shallow basket-arched entry.
The south front showcases bricks of a uniformly warm red hue laid in Flemish bond. It includes a segmental-headed two-light casement window on the upper floor, which has been renewed with diamond-lattice glazing. Above the left corner of the archway is an S-shaped tie-plate, and the building features moulded barge-boarding with an apex pendant, which is an extremely unusual survival.
The brickwork on the west side and rear is less uniform in color and bonding compared to the front, but the gables also have bargeboarding and pendants similar to those on the front. The west side includes a segmental-headed loft doorway that is accessed by a flight of steps at right angles. On the upper floor of the rear, there is a segmental-headed window containing what appears to be an original wooden two-light window, featuring a saddle bar in one light.
The east side is currently covered by the milkhouse that is attached to the brick barn to the east.
