Description
Athelstan is a house dating from the late 16th century, with significant additions and alterations made in the 19th century. The southwest front, facing the roadway, is rendered and has a slate roof with end stacks. The render is incised to resemble ashlar. A two-storey porch sits centrally, with moulded stone coping; the upper floor has late 19th-century sash windows with small panes, and the ground floor has semi-circular arched doorways. The front wall rises above the eaves to create a flat parapet with a thin stone coping. The ground and first floors, either side of the porch, contain four-pane sash windows with stone sills. A 20th-century oak entrance doorway, designed in the Arts and Crafts style, features a segmental pediment with dentils, a five-panel door, and an eight-pane overlight.
The southeast garden front is irregular. To the left is the gable of a late 16th-century house, which has a central projecting stack and a small four-pane sash window to the right. Further to the right, a gabled dormer has a large four-pane sash window. Below, on the ground floor, is a wide lean-to verandah with a slate roof. To the right is the gable of a 19th-century addition, featuring a semi-circular arched four-pane sash window in the gable head, two four-pane sashes on the first floor, and a canted bay window with a large 2+2+2 pane sash window on the ground floor.
The main entrance leads into a central passage. A staircase is located at right angles on the right-hand side. Ground floor rooms to the right and left feature chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops. A 19th-century staircase with winders around an open well has a ramped handrail, octagonal balusters, and newels with quatrefoil decoration. The roof is ceiled at collar level and consists of four bays. 19th-century extensions to the rear include marble fireplace surrounds with register grates.
