Description
Church Farmhouse is a building dating from the early structure within, but with a largely 18th and early 19th century facade. It is constructed of white-painted roughcast render on sandstone rubble, with a blue slate roof and red brick gable chimneys. The North facade is tall and severe, appearing typical of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with three storeys and three windows. A square porch with a pyramidal roof protects the doorway, which is offset slightly right of centre and has a chamfered Tudor-arched surround and a vertically-panelled door. A square window with coupled 12-pane sashes is to the left at ground floor, and a square 3-light small-paned casement window is to the right. The first floor has three small segmental-headed casement windows, and the top floor has three smaller 2-light casements immediately beneath the eaves, each with four panes.
A lean-to kitchen, recently raised to two storeys, is attached to the right-hand (West) gable wall, featuring modern openings, including the current main entrance. A large two-storey wing to the rear, which was formerly an agricultural building and is now an extension to the house, connects to a former barn that is now a separate property. The rear elevation has two windows on each floor, similar in shape to those at the front but irregularly disposed and mostly with altered glazing.
The main doorway opens into a short axial passage. Evidence in the form of vacant mortices in a ceiling beam suggests that there was formerly either a broad cross-passage or a central service room between the main rooms to the East and West, both of which have unusually high ceilings. The principal room to the East has exceptionally high-quality lateral ceiling beams and joists at 150cm and 30cm centres respectively. The beams are 30cm wide and elaborately decorated with roll mouldings separated by hollow mouldings brought to run-out stops; the joists are 10cm wide with similar decoration. A large stone fireplace is at the East gable wall, with an opening 186cm wide and 135cm high, under a massive monolithic lintel about 95cm deep, featuring a chamfered surround. A spiral staircase is located in the South East corner to the right of the fireplace. To the West, the main room (now integrated with the former central volume) has a fireplace 150cm wide and 123cm high, with a chamfered lintel. A short passage to the right (North) of the chimney breast leads to the lean-to kitchen, and a ¼-turned staircase, appearing to be inserted, is located in the Northwest corner. The upper floors have modern partitioning for guest rooms.
