Description
The Chain Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Usk. It features a painted steel single span with bowed lattice-girder arches, from which iron rods descend to support fish-belly pierced iron girders beneath the road deck. The two bowed trusses are linked over the roadway by two lattice girder spans. The bridge is adorned with iron decorative rails that include a moulded plinth, square posts, and rails featuring oval and circle patterns, along with a moulded handrail. At each end, there are rubble stone piers topped with dentiled cornices located just below the parapet level. The parapet consists of panelled sandstone ashlar long piers at each end, which have moulded cornices and caps, and commemorative bronze panels affixed to the western piers. Additionally, there are short lengths of coped squared rubble stone wall at each end.
