Description

Upper Berthllwyd is a farmhouse with a complex development history, largely dating back to the early 17th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone, some parts rendered, with slate roofs.

The original core of the farmhouse is a three-and-a-half-storey block positioned to the right when viewed from the south front, with a gabled roof on three sides. It has a large stone chimney stack on the west gable. A later, roughly contemporary, north-west stair wing extends to the rear, its ridge abutting the west chimney. A second, two-storey and attic whitewashed wing was added later, running west from the original west gable, and featuring a prominent, massive rubble stone ridge stack with two shafts.

The south gable front of the older range has a tall gable with a 2-light mullion window on the first floor, constructed of stone with a hoodmould and relieving arch. A small, original single-light window sits to the left on the first floor. A tiny blocked light is located in the gable apex, also with a dripstone and slate plaque above. The east side features two 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and a 3-light mullion window on the first floor, both with hoodmoulds and original relieving arches. Two small, chamfered basement windows are also present. The north gable has a series of 20th-century 2-light stone mullion windows arranged in a stepped fashion on the ground, first and attic floors, not aligned with each other. An original relieving arch appears over the first-floor window.

The north-west stair wing has two original 2-light stone mullion windows on its east side, one at a mid-level between the ground and first floors, and another slightly higher towards the left, both with eroded hoodmoulds. A later 2-light mullion window replaces the original at the top floor, on the left-hand side. A doorway is situated in the angle to the left, with part of a relieving arch and a small casement immediately to the right. The north end gable is heavily ivy-clad and contains windows arranged in a stepped pattern, including a stone-framed, chamfered light with the remains of a hood, a small chamfered light with a hood at eaves level, a 2-light version slightly lower to the left and a 20th-century copy window below the ridge of an added outbuilding.

The west wall is largely windowless; the roof is rebated on the right, with a short lean-to roof set in a rebate slightly below the main roofline. Three small single-light windows are positioned in the angle to the north side of the west range, one on each floor. A blocked door is also present, and straight joints are visible at first and second floor levels.

The rendered west wing has 19th or 20th-century casement windows. The south front features one window to the left of the ridge stack, and two to the right, on the first floor. The ground floor has a small window to the left, and two windows and a 6-panel door (two glazed panes) in a small porch to the right. The west gable end has a loft window and a 20th-century ground floor window. The rear north side has two first-floor windows and a ground floor window to the extreme left, along with a half-glazed door with fielded panels to the right.

The interior was inaccessible at the time of survey but is reported to contain a 3-plank door with decorated strap hinges under a wooden, decoratively shaped head on the first storey, a chamfered Tudor arch on the second storey, and a post-and-panel partition to a half-landing.
