Description

The outbuildings at Upper Berthllwyd consist of a barn and a large range of outbuildings arranged at right angles to each other. They are constructed from rubble stone and topped with asbestos sheet roofs. The barn features full-height doors on the south front, which are made of 20th-century metal, along with one vent loop to the right and two in the east end wall. The west end wall includes one loop and a loft light that is partly infilled. The north wall has a loop to the left and a full-height opening with a timber lintel.

The long range of outbuildings has a roof that matches the barn's height. There is a full-height opening in the angle to the right, which has been infilled with boarding and features outside stone steps leading to a loft door. To the left of the steps is a ground floor door. The stone front beyond includes a door with a timber lintel, a loft window above it, and a small ground floor window with a timber lintel next to a blocked opening. Another small window is located towards the center of the ground floor, along with two small vent loops on the first floor, one in the center and one to the right. There are three additional ground floor windows: one to the center left with a timber lintel, one in a blocked door, and a third paired with a blocked opening under red brick heads. A door at the extreme left has brick sides and a timber lintel.

The west side facing the road features 20th-century infill to a broad full-height opening against the west gable of the barn on the left. Further right, there is a ground floor window, followed by a blocked door, and then inserted late 19th or 20th-century brick-framed superimposed doors. There is also a blocked ground floor opening and an altered section at the extreme right, which appears to have two full-height straight joints with a blocked ground floor opening inserted and outside steps to the right leading to a blocked loft door.

Inside the barn, there are four trusses that may date from the late 18th century, featuring tie beams, small collars, angle struts, and triple purlins. The right end of the outbuilding appears to have originally been open-sided at the first floor, but it has since been lofted, although most of the floors have been removed.
