Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary and St Michael is a church dating from the 18th century, exhibiting group value. The exterior is of whitewashed roughcast, with a hipped slate roof. It is a single long range oriented north-south, featuring a raised plinth and rusticated stucco angle piers. A porch is located at the south end, an apse at the north end, and a small projecting vestry on the east side. The west side has six large arched windows, with the leftmost window having a slightly higher sill. The curved apse has two smaller arched windows. The east side is mostly windowless, maintaining the same angle piers. The added vestry features an east-facing bellcote, rusticated angle piers, a north-facing door, and arched windows on both sides. A small arched gallery light is set into the main church wall on the left side. The south end porch is hipped, with an arched window on the east side and a south-facing double door.

The interior is finely detailed, with a gallery at the south end and an apsed sanctuary at the north end, screened by two Roman Doric columns in antis. A cornice runs around the entire interior, leading to a deep cove in the ceiling. Two plain plaster roundels are centrally positioned on the ceiling. A door to the vestry is on the east wall towards the left, and a large statue niche is located to the right of the door. A dado rail runs along each side, leading up to the niche and matching window opposite. The ornate Italian altar formerly in the sanctuary has been removed. The south end bow-fronted gallery rests on Roman Doric columns and piers, with a two-two-two panel arrangement, featuring fluted pilasters between each panel. Within the apse are two fine Arts and Crafts style stained glass windows commemorating Elydyr Herbert, killed in 1917, and Ivor Herbert, Lord Treowen, who died in 1933, depicting SS Bernard and Francis. The south wall contains five windows with 17th and possibly 16th century continental stained glass, likely originating from the Rhineland or Flanders and installed in the later 19th century. The first window is dated 1659 and includes eight small panels in grisaille, with an inscription reading ‘?K. Immendorpff.’ The second depicts the head of a saint, likely St James, beneath a canopy; the third portrays St John with a dragon in a chalice; the fourth shows a 17th century scene of the Presentation, executed in a wood-engraving style with colored and gold grounds; and the fifth features a saint and Christ bestowing a blessing. A sixth window has 20th-century glass dedicated to Lady Treowen, who died in 1939, depicting Christ and St Teresa. Memorial plaques are dedicated to J.A.E. Herbert (died 1895), Lt Col Bleiddian Herbert (died 1931), Sir John Arthur Herbert (died 1945), Governor of Bengal 1939-43, Cecile Herbert of Clytha (died 1941), Brig-Gen. E.A. Herbert of Moynes Court (died 1948), and Mrs Fflorens Roch (died 1969).

The vestry includes a small plaster cornice, wall cupboards on either side of the north window, and a 20th-century stained glass window depicting St David, created at Caldey Abbey in a conventional 15th-century style. The entrance lobby features a six-panel door, a stone flag floor, gallery stairs with stick balusters and a ramped rail, and a window with stained glass depicting St Michael, commemorating Arthur Herbert, who died in 1921. An alabaster war memorial plaque is set into the west wall.
