Description

Barclays is a three-storey building constructed from grey coursed squared rock-faced rubble Forest of Dean sandstone, featuring Bath limestone ashlar dressings and a red Staffordshire sandstone plinth, topped with Welsh slate roofs. Designed in an Italianate/classical style, the building has a tall rectangular shape with five windows arranged as 1 + 3 + 1, where the outer bays are set forward.

On the ground floor, there is a round arched arcade with panelled double doors at either end, both of which have fanlights above. The windows between the doors also feature fanlights. The plinth is panelled, and pilasters are positioned between the windows, with subsidiary pilasters supporting the window arches, which are keyed and have sunk spandrels. The pilasters flanking the doors extend upward to support a heavy cornice and continue through the upper floors, featuring horizontal banding that supports the eaves cornice.

On the first floor, the outer bay windows are topped with pedimented heads on brackets, while the inner windows have bracketted flat heads with finials. The windows consist of 2 and 3 pane upper sashes above single pane lower sashes. The second floor features arched windows with rusticated architraves and 1 over 1 pane sashes. A heavy eaves cornice is supported by paired brackets on each pilaster, with an ashlar apron below and sunk spandrels to the outer windows. The outer bays are adorned with pedimented features that include scrolled brackets and a carved panel in the centre. A three-bay balustraded parapet, with turned balusters and vases, sits atop the building. The steeply pitched roof is complemented by large ashlar stacks on either gable.

The interior of the ground floor has been completely remodelled in the late 20th century.
