Description

Castle Hill House is a 17th-century building faced in roughcast, with previously recorded quoins now cemented over, and a Welsh slate roof. It has a double fronted central entrance plan with additions at the rear. The house stands three storeys tall with a part basement in the plinth and features five windows. The windows are arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, with the central window directly above the door. They are double hung sashes with 6 over 6 panes, all recessed and with horns; the top floor windows are also 6 over 6 but are smaller. The doorway features a segmental shell hood on console brackets and a transom light, with steps leading up to a 2-panel door. The roof is plain with end gable stacks in brick.

The rear elevation shows a late 20th-century alteration in the form of a two-storey extension that abuts the central gabled stair wing to the right. This stair wing has been heightened to accommodate the stair to the added upper floor. The entire elevation is rendered and painted, with most features replaced by reproduction 6 over 6 pane sashes and part glazed doors. There is an arched window on the first floor to the left with French casements leading onto a small iron balcony.

Inside, the house displays early 18th-century planning and features, along with evidence of changes made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The central entrance hall leads to a stair at the rear, with moulded 2-panel doors. The open well stair has twisted balusters, a pine rail, and a cut string. The dining room on the left features full height early 18th-century panelling. The top floor and roof structure indicate that they were added in the early 19th century. The house also has vaulted cellars.
