Description

Nos. 21 and 22 Frogmore Street are a late 17th century timber-framed townhouse, built of red brick with roughcast render and applied timber framing. They stand on a narrow medieval plot, with a gable end facing the street. The building features two wide bays, each representing a separate property, with a narrow central bay shared between them, containing a passageway. The ground floor has shopfronts with a central entrance; that of No. 22 appears to be less altered than No. 21’s.

The first floor has red brick facing on No. 21 and painted brickwork on No. 22. Both have canted oriel windows with paired 1 over 1 pane sashes to the front, and narrower similar windows to the flanks. These windows are topped with pedimented heads, which are incorporated into the gables above. A central window above the passageway has a 1 over 1 pane sash in an elliptical head. The second floor features large timber-framed gables, with roughcast between the timbers. These gables are supported by carved console brackets depicting lion’s heads. Each gable has two windows: fancy Edwardian sashes with multi-pane over 2 lights to No. 21, and plain 1 over 1 pane replacements to No. 22. The gables are finished with tile hanging to the apex, plain bargeboards, and a spike finial. The central bay has a cornice separating the floors, and a triple window with small 6 over 1 pane sashes. The roof is plain, with a central ridge stack.

No. 22 has painted brickwork, and its windows have been altered, though the shopfront remains largely original. The rear elevation has not been inspected. The ground floor interior has few visible historic features.
