Description

The gatehouse and attached range at St Pierre Hotel is a notable structure built from local limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof on the two-storey range. The roofing material of the tower is likely lead. The building features a three-storey entrance tower alongside a two-storey range that appears to be contemporary with the tower.

The tower has three bays, with the outer bays designed as octagonal stair turrets and the central bay featuring a tall pointed arch that leads to a brick vaulted entrance. Above the entrance is a three-light window with four-centred lights set within a rectangular frame, complete with a dripmould above. There is a similar two-light window above this, along with small rectangular windows in the turrets. The turrets rise above the main roof and are battlemented, as is the main parapet. The side walls of the tower are mostly blind, except for a small circular window facing the church. The rear of the tower lacks turrets or battlements.

To the left of the tower, there is a four-bay wing featuring two-light windows of 15th-century style on the ground floor, similar to those on the tower, and late 20th-century casements above. A two-centred archway connects at right angles at the left end of the range, with a dripmould returning over the arch, accompanied by battlements. Adjacent to the tower is a single two-light window into the attic storey, which is otherwise unlit on the front elevation, located in a small lean-to against the stair turret.

The rear elevation was not observed except for the ground floor area now inside the hotel reception, which was previously part of the open courtyard. The entrance arch features glazed double doors, with two four-centred arch doorways to the right leading into the rear of the range; these may be original or part of 18th-century alterations.

The interior was not inspected during the resurvey but is reported to have been fully modernized by the hotel, although the spiral stone staircases remain.
