Description
The Garndiffaith Railway Viaduct is an originally twin track railway structure built between 1876 and 1877. It features snecked rubble construction with ashlar impost bands and a vermiculated stringcourse above its arches, which are made of blue brick voussoirs and soffits, supported by stone piers. The viaduct has nine semi-circular arches, each 50 feet wide, arranged in three equal sections of three arches, with corbelled refuges on every third pier. It follows a gentle curve and narrows towards the east end. A chamfered ashlar plaque on the pier by Viaduct Road indicates its construction by engineer John Gardner. The viaduct has been repurposed as a cycle track and footpath, with fences on either side, and is beginning to be covered with vegetation.
