Description

High Street Baptist Church is a small rectangular chapel with a gable front, built in a Classical/Italianate style. It features large extensions at the back and on either side. The exterior is rendered and painted, likely over brick, and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The front facade has three bays, with the central entrance bay slightly projecting. It includes a cill band at the first floor and quoin pilasters with fluted paterae panels. The entrance consists of panelled doors with a rectangular light above, set in a pedimented frame, flanked by arch-headed windows that have raised architraves, keystones, and impost blocks. The first floor has a larger version of this window in the center, divided into three panes by a transom with a mullion below. Each side of the facade is decorated with a large paterae feature on the plain wall. A cornice extends into a block above the central bay, and the gable end is pedimented with plaster decoration and wave pattern bargeboards.

The side elevations each have three windows on both floors, framed similarly and finished with three panes. The rear has hipped roof extensions.

The interior was refitted in 1868 and has remained largely unchanged since. It features a raked gallery on all four sides, supported by slim cast iron columns with floriate capitals, a serpentine iron front, and a mahogany rail. The seating includes complete pews below and benches in the gallery. A large organ is situated in the arch leading to the rear extension, which has a decorative iron and mahogany rail in front and a glazed screen behind it. The walls are plain with few monuments, the most notable being a memorial to the victims of the Llanerch Colliery explosion of 1890. The interior includes three kingpost roof trusses, while the spaces in the rear extension, such as the Sunday School and Minister's rooms, are functional.
