Description
The Monks Cell at Llantarnam Abbey is a former outbuilding now used as a cottage, constructed from purple squared rubble stone with ashlar dressings and featuring a hipped slate roof with eaves brackets. This single-storey building has a T-plan layout and an ashlar ridge stack on the rear wing, showcasing Tudor-style details.
The east front has a central entrance located under eaves-breaking coped curved head with a finial. The pointed ashlar doorway is adorned with leaf spandrels, a hoodmould, and carved head stops. The hood previously stepped over a curved-headed plaque that displays a shield and the date 1905. On either side of the entrance are broad three-light windows with Tudor-arched heads, fitted with 20th-century glazing. Access to the door is via three steps, flanked by low side walls made of grey Forest of Dean ashlar.
At the northeast corner, there is a projected tower with a broad octagonal base, featuring a single light on four of its faces and a slate roof that extends around with matching eaves brackets. This tower culminates in a round upper turret with arch-headed narrow lights and a conical roof, also supported by eaves brackets and topped with a weathercock.
The north end of the building has a turret on the left and a blocked Tudor-arched door, with a low curving Forest of Dean stone wall to the right. The rear wing is hipped to the west and includes a north-facing two-light window and a blocked door, both with Tudor-arched designs. The west end features ashlar quoins and two two-light windows, while the south side has a Tudor-arched door and a two-light window, with a panelled door. The south end of the main range mirrors the north end with a similar Tudor-arched doorway and panelled door, accompanied by a curving Forest of Dean stone wall.
The building is not available for inspection.
