Description
Zion Baptist Church is a late 19th-century chapel built in 1875 to serve the growing population of Forge Side, at a cost of £650. It was established as a daughter church of the English Baptist Chapel on Broad Street. In the mid-1880s, a schoolroom was added, with materials provided free of charge by the Blaenavon Iron and Steel Company. The church is a well-preserved example of chapel architecture typical of the late 19th century in the Valleys.
The church is constructed on a rectangular plan using rubble stone laid in courses, with brick dressings. The main gable facade features three bays and is a single storey. The main elevation has a stone plinth and brick quoins, with all openings dressed in brick and featuring semi-circular arches with brick keystones. The central doorway has a wooden panelled door that is set back. Flanking the doorway are three tall small pane sash windows on either side, each with angled stone sills and intersecting glazing bars. Above the upper window, there is a plaque. The side elevations are rendered, and the windows have modern glazing bars. The building is topped with simple wooden barge-boards and a pitched slate roof.
Inside, the church retains original features including a pulpit with a pair of stairs, a baptismal pool in front, and wooden pews, but there is no gallery. The church is listed for its well-preserved historic character as a later 19th-century chapel.
