Description
The boundary walls, gates, and railings at St George’s Church date from the 19th century and extend approximately 60 metres from north to south. At each end, there are matching gates and piers. The railings are set on low rubble walls that feature dressed chamfered copings. The tall cast iron railings have diagonally-set rails and spear finials on both the rails and the lower dog-rail. The strengthening posts are round with a slight curve and topped with urn finials. The gate piers are made of ashlar and have moulded copings that have been replaced with cement. The paired gates exhibit similar detailing to the railings. Starting from the northern end, there is a short length of wall followed by three bays of railings, then paired gates flanked by piers. The central stretch of walls is long and features rails that step up slightly with the rise in the street. Beyond this, there are paired gates and piers, along with four bays of railings set on a low wall at the southern end.
