Description

Celynen Collieries Workmen's Institute is one of the larger remaining miners' institutes. It is constructed of red and yellow brick, some of which is painted, with painted stone dressings. The building features a hipped slate roof, which is partly Welsh and partly artificial, with overhanging eaves that have sprocketed sides, a central ventilator, and gable finials with tile-hung apexes, which previously included some fishscale tiling. There is a rockfaced stone plinth at the base.

The upper windows primarily have fixed glazing with tipping casements in the multipane upper lights, while the ground floor has plate glazing that has been altered, and some windows are blocked. The decorative surrounds in yellow brick include a moulded nookshaft and chamfered lintels with a central round moulding. The main facade faces the thoroughfare and is two storeys high, separated by a moulded string with a floral frieze above the entrance. It has a nine-window range divided into three bays.

To the left, there is an advanced gabled bay with four round-headed windows on the first floor, which have decorative hoodmoulds, and paired windows with a roundel above in the center. The right side features a full-length bay with a small balcony. The ground floor has rectangular windows and an original blocked round-arched doorway, which is framed by moulded pilasters with wide decorative capitals and a keystone bracket. To the right and at the end right, the two bays contain two close-set windows on each floor, separated by an inscription band that reads 'Celynen Collieries Workmens Institute'. The intervening bay, located center right, is gabled and has similar paired round-headed windows on the first floor, along with a canted bay window that has a decorative crest below.

The side elevation, which faces the side street, has four bays with two pairs of round-headed windows on the first floor that extend above eaves level, featuring gables above. The ground and first floors also have similar rectangular windows, and there is a canted bay with a decorative crest. A doorway on the left side is now the main entrance.

The interior has mostly been refurbished, with a billiard room located on the first floor.
