Description

The Celynen Collieries Workmen's Memorial Hall, along with its forecourt wall and gates, is a tall building in pressed red brick with yellow brick and bathstone dressings, built in the 20th century. The side and rear elevations are in local stone, also with yellow brick dressings, and topped by a hipped slate roof with a large, louvred ventilator. The front has three bays, appearing to be three storeys high. The central bay is narrow, with flanking pilasters that extend above the parapet. It features a lunette with a tall keystone and leaded glazing containing stained glass panels, while the segmental head of the doorway is obscured by a later porch. The outer bays have tall windows with cross glazing, and pilasters at the ends. The sides have camber-headed windows with yellow brick dressings. The rear elevation, higher due to the ground level, includes a broad doorway leading to the stage area and blocked windows at ground level. A low wall with brick piers, decorative iron gates, and railings defines the front area.

The lobby contains a marble war memorial tablet and a paybooth, with flanking steps leading upward. The dance hall has a sprung floor and retains its original ceiling above a more recent suspended ceiling. There are two stages, connected by steps, and original grilles above the windows. Above the dance hall is a cinema with a high-quality and exceptionally well-preserved auditorium. The lobby to the cinema features an art-deco style paybooth. The auditorium is in a classical style, with a segmental ceiling constructed with classicising ribs and decorative vents. The proscenium arch is adorned with gilded bead-and-reel, acanthus, and Greek key mouldings, incorporating an Egyptian motif in the tympanum. The backstage area contains a screen frame and theatre machinery. The auditorium’s body features an acanthus cornice, a band of roundels above a band of Vitruvian wave moulding. At lower level, there is oak panelling. Round-headed windows with fanlights and screens with Islamic style piercing are positioned to the sides, with painted roundels depicting scenes of heavy manual labour between the windows and flanking the proscenium. Below these roundels are later panels depicting the Boy Scout movement. The rear gallery has an enriched bow front, with panelling and enrichment on the underside. Original seats remain in the gallery, while the stalls seats are currently stored there. Behind the gallery sits a projection booth, containing two mid-20th century sound projectors and a partly extant RCA Photophone valve amplifier. The interior retains virtually all its original doors and many original fittings.
