Description
The Lime Kilns on Van Road are a Grade II listed structure consisting of a kiln bank situated on sloping ground, designed to take advantage of the natural gradient for charging at the top and drawing at the bottom. The walls were originally faced with hammer-dressed stone, although most of this has been removed, leaving the core stonework exposed. On the downhill side, there are three semi-circular draw arches. These arches have been infilled with spoil, except on the right side where the cast iron lintel above the draw hole is still visible.
At the charging level, there is a single circular filling hole and a second, much wider filling hole with straight sides and rounded ends. This larger filling hole was likely created by combining two former circular kilns, and it is served by two draw holes.
