Description

Penmaen House is a T-shaped farmhouse with an attached barn wing, dating from an unspecified period. The original part of the house is located to the southeast, with the barn extension to the west, forming a long range. The house is built of limewashed stone rubble, while the barn features coursed rubble on its gable end, all under a steeply pitched corrugated roof. There are three rendered ridge stacks. The building has two storeys at the rear and a single storey with an attic at the front. At the rear, there is a ground floor window with a hood, a blocked opening nearby, and an upper window located under the eaves. The wall steps back to the barn wing, and the windows at the front have been altered. The lower rear cross wing has a yellow brick stack at the gable end, a lower roof covered with machine tiles, a rooflight, a small window under the eaves at first floor level, and segmentally arched openings on the ground floor.

Inside, the main ground floor room is reported to retain massive chamfered beams, a stone flagged floor, and a fireplace. There are steps through an adjoining doorway leading down to a cross passage, and a six-panelled door with a reeded frame. There is a further step down to the northwest ground floor room, which features large ceiling beams and a 19th-century marble fireplace surround with flanking round arched recesses that have moulded arches on reeded pilasters with capitals. A wooden staircase is present. The rear wing includes a fireplace with a 19th-century range, a segmental ledged door leading to a coal hole on one side, and a bread oven on the other.
