Description

3 Quay Row is a house located in a row of early 19th century industrial workers' cottages that were associated with the nearby collieries. It is situated just northwest of the former Lucy Thomas dock on the Glamorganshire Canal. Early 19th century Ordnance Survey maps show two parallel rows of cottages, and the 1850 tithe map indicates additional rows to the west. At that time, the area was part of the estate of Thomas Thomas. By 1919, most of the western row had been demolished, leaving only Quay Row.

This house is part of a row of four that face the former canal. The two-storey row is constructed of rubble stone and includes four double-fronted houses (numbers 2 to 5) and one half-width house at the end, which was formerly number 1 and is now part of number 2. Originally, numbers 2 to 5 were designed around a central passageway and a rear staircase. The openings feature stone voussoirs, and the houses have a narrow depth with no outshut or lean-to at the rear. Numbers 6 and 7, which have been completely rebuilt, may have once been similar to numbers 2 to 5.

Number 3 is whitewashed and has a slate roof with a stone chimney on the right. The facade is offset to the left and features two 9-pane sash windows on each floor, along with a central 20th-century framed ledged door. All openings have stucco surrounds with minimal pediments, and the door surround includes a keystone, similar to number 2. Since 1975, the windows have been restored, and the pebbledash cladding has been removed. The property has not been inspected.
