Description
5 Quay Row is a house in a row of early 19th century industrial workers' cottages associated with the nearby collieries, located just northwest of the former Lucy Thomas dock on the Glamorganshire Canal. Early 19th century Ordnance Survey maps show two parallel rows of cottages, while the 1850 tithe map indicates additional rows to the west. At that time, the area was part of the estate of Thomas Thomas. By 1919, most of the western parallel row had been demolished, leaving Quay Row.
This house is part of a row of four that fronts the former canal. The two-storey rubble stone row consists of four double-fronted houses (Nos 2-5) and one half-width house at the end, which was formerly No 1 and is now part of No 2. Originally, Nos 2-5 had a plan arranged around a central passageway and rear staircase. The openings feature stone voussoirs, and the houses have a narrow depth with no outshut or lean-to at the rear. Nos 6-7, which have been wholly rebuilt, may have once been similar to Nos 2-5.
No 5 is a plain rubble stone structure with concrete tiles, lacking chimneys, and features two windows on each floor along with a central door, all in thin stucco surrounds. The windows and door have been replaced with uPVC. The property has not been inspected.
