Description

80 Nightingale Street is a house within a terraced row at Abercanaid, an important early group of industrial workers' housing. The terrace forms part of a larger settlement originally comprising 7 terraces arranged in 4 rows facing east between the river and canal, plus additional longer rows to the north known as The Squares, a terrace of larger houses, and 2 detached houses for senior employees. Built between 1852 and 1861, possibly by the Plymouth Iron Company to house workers at Abercanaid Pit and Pentrebach Forge, the houses are relatively generous for their era despite their modest size. They are double-fronted rather than the earlier single-window-and-door type, though narrow in plan with roof spans of 4 to 5 metres and no rear outshuts, as they had access from both front and rear.

The house is 2 storeys tall, built of squared rubble stone with a close-eaved slate roof and stone end chimneys. It is double-fronted with originally small-paned sash windows, 2 to each floor, and a centre door probably with an overlight. Stone voussoirs and sills detail the openings on both floors. The rear wall is also of rubble stone and originally had one small door and pantry window to one side below and one small upper window. The house was designed with a plan arranged around a centre passageway and rear staircase. The facade is slightly offset from its pair to accommodate a larger kitchen chimney, part of an alternating pattern creating mirrored pairs along the row.

Originally the houses had gardens accessed via a footpath running down the terrace line. Those backing onto gardens have generally been extended to the rear; others retain their original depth. No 80 has had all windows and door replaced in uPVC since listing in 1975. The rear wall has been rendered.
