Description
The Former Guest Memorial Library is a Grade II* listed building designed in a classical style, featuring a cruciform shape and two storeys, with the main rooms elevated on a basement level. The structure is constructed from a variety of stones, including a massive rock-faced grey stone basement and coursed squared brown sandstone walling above, complemented by a Bath stone balustrade, tetrastyle portico, eaves cornices, and pediments. The side walls have windows set in grey Forest of Dean stone recessed panels.
At the front, there is a raised portico with pedimented wings on either side and a long main hall range situated behind. The basement features rock-faced square piers with a grey stone frieze above, and within the recess, there is a central door flanked by narrow windows set in a stuccoed wall. Above this, four Bath stone Tuscan columns on pedestals support a fine plain entablature and pediment. Inside the portico, there is a painted stucco wall with long French windows positioned between Tuscan pilasters, each topped with a sunk panel.
The wings on either side of the portico are windowless, constructed with grey rock-faced basement and coursed sandstone walling above, featuring a thin band at the level of the pedestal tops, along with an ashlar entablature and eaves cornice. The ends of the wings have smaller pediments above three recessed long first-floor panels, with the central panel being broader. Each long panel has a recessed section over a long window with top lights, consisting of a two-light window in the center and one-light windows on either side. A sill course runs around the entire building. The basement has similar short square windows situated between the piers. The hall range at the back has four long windows that match the style of the front, with a sill course above a rock-faced grey stone basement that includes short square windows. The end wall features a pediment over 20th-century lean-to additions.
The interior has been modernized for use as a social club.
