Description

Bethania Independent Chapel is an Independent Chapel built in 1910, featuring unpainted stucco in an Italianate/Classical style. It has a slate roof with bracketed eaves and terracotta ridge tiles. The gable facade and the center of the long wall facing South Street have deeply bracketed timber pediments. The South Street elevation is two stories high with four windows and a pediment over two of the bays. There is a channelled plinth on the right side, accommodating the slope of the site, and channelled rusticated raised surrounds to the windows, which are set in full-height vertical panels. Both floors have moulded sill courses, and the ground floor has channelled angle piers that change to paired pilasters at the second storey level. The rear wall appears identical to the front but has lower fenestration that is blocked.

The gabled entrance front features similar channelled angle piers and pilasters, along with a first storey band, but is otherwise simpler. The ground floor has been altered, showing evidence of three blocked roundels above double wooden doors. The lower storey has square-headed windows, while the upper storey has arched-headed windows that lack rustication but include keystones. These windows are smaller than those on the street front. There is a keyed roundel in the pediment. To the left of the South Street facade is an attached schoolroom with a stone gabled face, dated 1867. It has a simple arched door flanked by a pair of arched-headed windows, all featuring stone voussoirs.

The chapel was not accessible at the time of the survey, but it is said to have a complete interior from 1910, galleried on three sides, capable of seating 1,200 people, which is described as an impressive sight. It also features 'restrained Mackintosh-style' stained glass.
