Description
This is a long, two-storey bingo hall dating from the 20th century, built with a gable-end facade in a free classical style. The building’s three-bay facade is angled to respect the road layout and slopes downwards from north to south. The facade is constructed with ashlar, painted pink, in the form of large square pilasters that divide and flank the bays. The spaces between the pilasters are rendered and whitewashed. A rusticated dressed stone plinth runs beneath the facade, being higher at the downslope end.
The central bay is the widest and features a moulded round-arched head and a moulded string course at first-floor level. The upper storey has a central flat-headed window with a moulded sill, flanked by smaller, narrower windows with eared and shouldered architraves. These windows contain four-pane horned sashes. Below the arch, framing the central window, is a stylised festoon with long drops. Beneath the string course are two two-light windows with moulded sills and aprons, each light containing a horned sash. The pilasters have recessed panels and high, plain capstones, each topped with a cartouche decorated with ribbons, framed by roll moulding and foliate decoration. The outer bays have full-width segmental arches; the left-hand one is over a recessed entrance with late 20th-century double-panelled, half-glazed doors accessed by steps. The right-hand arch has been infilled and contains a two-light window in a moulded surround. Above each arch is an oculus within a moulded surround, featuring a high keystone that forms the central point of a stylised festoon. The keystones project above a moulded string course leading to plain parapets.
The sides and rear of the building are rendered and contain few openings: two small vents are present on the north side, while the rear has no openings. The south side has two fire-escape doorways at first-floor level, accessible by open metal staircases. The doorway to the left has an angled head, while the one to the right has a segmental head. A further doorway is located at ground-floor level between these, all containing boarded doors.
Inside, the bingo hall retains its original layout but has been modernised. The entrance vestibule leads to toilets on the right, and straight ahead to the former cinema space. A canted ceiling features modern panels, and the floor slopes downwards from west to east. Galleries are located at each end, supported by square piers with open fronts and stairs on each side. The side walls have plain pilasters.
