Description

Hetty Engine House is a monumental, three-storey engine house with a gabled roof, constructed from banded snecked rock-faced stone and topped with a slate roof. The windows are boarded up but still have their iron frames, with some featuring additional wood-framed glazing bars. The engine is located in the upper storey. The north gable end has a large round-headed opening that is now blocked. The diagonal feet of the headframe are crudely inserted on both the right and left sides, while the winding ropes enter through the roof.

On the left side, there are four round-headed keyed windows with sills and a central doorway that is accessed by an external steel walkway over the former boiler house walls. Above this doorway is a tablet with an inscribed date. A steam pipe is located just below the upper plinth on the left side. The right side wall features a doorway at the left end, which was formerly a window, and four windows, with the central window being lower and originally a doorway.

The south gable end, facing the road, has two round-headed windows in the upper storey and two small openings that are boarded up at the ends just below the band. At the base of the building, there is a round-headed through passage at the south end. On the west side, to the left of this passage, is a blocked window with a brick surround. The east side features the wall of the former boiler house, made of rubble stone.

Inside, the building retains a double-cylinder engine by Barker and Cope, which has been modified by Worsley Mesnes, along with winding drums. The walls show traces of scribed plaster, and the roof consists of five bays with trusses concealed behind asbestos panels. There are also remnants of a ribbed ceiling visible behind the asbestos.
