Description

Trehondda Welsh Independent Chapel is a 19th-century building constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings on the main front, snecked stone on the sides, and rendered at the rear. It features a Welsh slate roof. The gable end facade rises two storeys and includes three windows at the gallery level: a central round-arched three-light window flanked by two segmental-headed windows. Above these is a pediment with a relief inscription panel, and below a string course, the ground floor has similar side segmental-headed windows along with a round-arched central doorway that has double panelled doors and a fanlight.

The main side elevation facing the road has six bays, featuring six round-headed windows at the gallery level and four camber-headed windows at the ground floor, with one doorway that has been blocked. The downhill side elevation mirrors this design. All windows are fitted with multipane sashes and have rock-faced voussoirs, quoins, and sills. At the southern end, there is a single-storey vestry wing with a concrete tiled roof and gables over two round-headed sash windows that flank a deep gabled porch, which has small round-headed windows on each side. A further side wing is attached to the rear left of the chapel. The site is enclosed by low coursed rock-faced stone walls with coping, cast iron railings, and tall gate piers, some topped with cross-gabled capstones, although the railings are now missing at the front left.

Inside, the chapel features an ornate plaster and board ceiling that is ribbed in a petal pattern, with a pitch pine outer border and timber ribs that converge towards a large central rose, which is partially missing. The round-arched reredos on the end wall is adorned with panelled and fluted pilasters and painted foliage ornament, and it includes three stencilled panels.
