Description

The Detroit and St Vincent block at Maindy Barracks is a Grade II listed building consisting of two parallel two-storey wings with 19 bays each, connected by an added two-storey gabled wing. The structure is built from coursed rock-faced Pennant sandstone, with freestone bands and a cornice, topped by a slate roof behind coped gables on moulded kneelers. The windows throughout have been replaced but remain in their original openings.

Both main wings face east, with the Detroit wing on the east side and the St Vincent wing behind it, and they are symmetrical, featuring three central bays beneath an advanced gable. The Detroit wing has a central doorway with double boarded doors and a round-headed overlight. There are paired windows in the bays to the right and left, set under relieving arches on the upper storey, and a tripartite window in the upper center with stone mullions and a round-headed tympanum adorned with plate tracery. The apex of this wing features a round clock with a dressed surround and a regimental motto displayed on corbels. There are eight bays on either side of the central gable.

The gable ends of the wings have external stacks that are cut down beneath the apex, flanked by narrow vents. The rear of the Detroit wing has nine bays on either side of a central link, with windows similar to those at the front. It also features an added escape door with a stair in the upper left and a doorway inserted in the bay set back from the left end. The link between the two wings consists of single-bay projections with roofs behind coped parapets, along with a three-bay gabled wing in between. The front of the St Vincent wing mirrors that of the Detroit wing, with the link occupying the central bay, and the gable ends are similar as well. The rear of the St Vincent block has eight bays on either side of narrow V-shaped bays, flanking a shallow lean-to in the center that has replaced double doors under a relieving arch and a tripartite window above with mullions and a transom.
