Description
The former depot hospital at Maindy Barracks is a 2-storey building designed in a 'pavilion plan' style. It features a 3-bay main section facing southeast and is roughly square in shape, with a slightly taller wing set back on the northeast side that contains wards on both floors. The building is constructed from snecked rock-faced Pennant sandstone, accented with Bath stone dressings, and has a slate roof with coped gables supported by moulded kneelers. There is a stone stack to the left of the main range and two stone stacks at the rear of the wing, which has a coped parapet on the southeast and northeast sides.
The windows are primarily transomed and often include mullions, featuring small-pane hornless sashes. The main range has a central gabled porch with double panelled doors and a round-headed overlight above. Above the porch is a slightly recessed 3-light mullioned window, while the outer gabled bays have 2-light windows.
To the right side, there is a 3-window wing that also has transomed windows and relieving arches. The right end wall of this wing features a 3-light mullioned and transomed window, along with a doorway to the left. The right side includes a sanitary annex, which is a projecting square tower at the northwest corner, featuring two narrow sashes on the southeast side and three narrow sashes on the northeast and northwest elevations. The rear of the wing has three windows similar to those at the front, with stacks rising from the eaves in between. The rear of the main range has sash windows in the outer gabled bays, except for the lower right where there is a boarded door and overlight. The central bay has sash windows, with a boarded door and overlight to its left in the lower storey, and a lean-to porch on the right side at the top of an external cantilevered staircase in the upper storey.
The left (southwest) side of the main range is enclosed by a walled yard, which features both single and double boarded doors. This elevation has three sash windows in the upper storey and a stack to the right.
