Description
St German’s Court is a former school, dating back to the 18th century, that has been converted into residential accommodation. The building consists of a tall, two-storey and attic, long block with a narrow, gabled projection on the right-hand side and a lower, cross-range forward on the left. A later two-storey block covers the entrance, forming an angle to the left. The roofs are steeply pitched and tiled, featuring bargeboards (with raised gables to the outer wings), oversailing eaves, and restored red brick stacks to the front wall chimneys, which include set-offs and ornamental brackets supporting a bell on the central stack. The walls are rendered, with freestone dressings (painted), including a sillband at the first floor level, a hoodmould to the ground floor windows, and fleur-de-lys panels. The building has a pair of large, tiled, gabled dormers with four-light casement windows set behind the tiled eaves to the first floor, with two-light windows below the eaves. Five two-light mullioned and transomed windows are on the ground floor, although the upper lights are blocked. The windows were originally fitted with small-pane leaded glazing, but have been replaced with timber and metal frames. The right-hand gable features a two-light Tudor attic window, and a pointed arch leads to the boys’ stair entry in the return angle. The gable facing Tin Street has a single attic window, and two windows on each of the first and ground floors. The left-hand cross-range is one and a half storeys high, with a window to each floor in the gable (a blind window at the apex) and a corner chimney to the right. The inner return features a large, tiled, gabled dormer, and two small-pane windows to the ground floor. A modern range to the north along Metal Street is not included in the listing.
