Description
Roath Branch Library is a library building constructed from red brick with bathstone dressings and bands, topped with a slate roof. It features a two-storey elevation. The entrance facing Newport Road has seven windows framed by shallow pilasters. The upper windows are three-light mullion and transom windows, glazed with lead cames. On the ground floor, the central doorway has a segmental arch with a keystone, and the windows have a similar design with wooden mullions and transoms.
The west gable end displays a Dutch gable with a relief of the Cardiff arms at the apex, along with bathstone banding. Below, there is a thermal window and a broad window with a stone architrave, flanked by four Ionic pilasters, and a central four-light mullion and transom window with single light windows in the outer bays. The ground floor features a single-storey extension with three segmental-headed windows, a broader central window flanked by Ionic pilasters, and spandrels with relief decoration of putti, along with segmental-headed windows on the returns. At the rear, there is an attached parallel range with a roof-light and smaller blocks. The east gable end has a thermal window above a four-light mullion and transom window, with smaller windows on the sides.
The interior has been re-ordered and is now open-plan. The upper walls are finished in buff brick, while the lower walls are plastered. There is an arcade of broad round arches supported by squat Doric columns on plinths, and the semi-open roof is ceiled at collar level.
