Description
Kennixton Farmhouse is a 17th century building featuring red washed stone rubble walls and thatched roofs, with some parts of the structure renewed during reconstruction. It has an L-shaped plan with a cross-passage that separates the original house from its extensions. The main chimney stack is located in the original house and backs onto the passage. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a two-storey rear wing at the north-west end.
The elevation facing the yard, which forms the inside of the L, includes three 3 over 6-pane sash windows in the parlour wing to the left, and to the right, there are three-pane casements, with two located above and one below. The north-west elevation features a central door, with a 3 over 6-pane sash window to the left above a 6 over 6-pane sash, followed by a 2-pane casement. To the right, there is a 6 over 6-pane sash window with 3-pane casements above.
The ground floor rooms are characterized by stopped and chamfered beams and mortar floors made from a formula described in Iolo Morganwg's writings. There is a recess in the kitchen ceiling for hanging bacon. The thatch is supported by woven straw mats, with scissors tie trusses in the southern bedroom and upper crucks. The farmhouse contains many pieces of furniture from the Glen George collection, primarily from Glamorganshire and Carmarthenshire. The sites of the outbuildings are marked in the yard outside.
