Description

Nicells is a house, originally dating back to the 17th century, and extended in the 18th century. It is constructed of colourwashed rubblestone with a slate roof, close eaves, and brick chimney stacks to the right gable and ridge, and a large stone stack to the left gable. The south elevation, formerly the main facade, features a door offset to the right, now blocked and with a relieving arch above. It has tripartite three-light casement windows on the ground floor and modern casements above. There are inline windows to the left, staggered windows either side of the door with upper windows offset to the outside. A blocked window sits immediately above the door, and a further blocked window retains its original timber mullion frame to the left. The north elevation includes a central 20th-century single-storey gabled porch, three four-light casement windows to the first floor, modern casements to the left and right, and a four-light sash to the right of the porch.

To the right and attached is a single-story rubblestone wing with a 20th-century screen wall to the front. Behind this, with internal access from the house, are two outbuildings. A single-story lean-to garage is attached to the left.

Originally a two-bay hall and outer room with direct access on the south side, the hall on the east side is now divided by a later full-height masonry wall. This wall obscures a large internal gable chimney that incorporates a bread oven, and a later inserted oven. The fireplace was originally wider and has been narrowed, with the original jamb stones visible to the left and the lintel shortened. The jambs to the fireplace and other internal dressings are of Blue Lias stone, with red rubblestone used for the main wall construction. To the left of the hall fireplace is a cupboard formed from the base of a stone gable stair; the lower steps have been removed, but the remainder leading up to the first floor remain. A masonry partition wall now separates the former hall into two rooms with a further central room. The outer room to the west is divided from the hall by a masonry partition wall and retains a gable fireplace with a large timber lintel, a clay bake-oven to the left, and a further blocked opening to the right. A window on the south wall has been centred within this room and the original lintel survives higher against the west gable. Later stairs rise to the north to the first floor. Above the hall, a cupboard has been formed from the head of the stone stairs and there's a deep recess to the right (south) side of the gable, featuring a heavy timber door frame. A window on the south wall has a plain chamfer stopped stone surround. A blocked timber mullion window with an inserted window sits to the side of the central room, alongside a cupboard in the west gable. The attic features four pegged King Post roof trusses with struts. The central truss, above the hall, is clad and plastered, while a masonry wall marking the hall/outer room partition rises to the ridge.
