Description

The North Hydraulic Pumping House is a Grade II listed building featuring two ranges constructed in red and blue engineering brick, designed in a matching style. These ranges include corbel-headed panels and segmental arched small-pane windows. Both ranges have double-gabled roofs supported by wrought-iron trusses, with partially timber-panelled ceilings, a slate covering, and raised louvred roof-lights.

The north range, which is longer at 9 bays, housed workshops and hydraulic controls. It has two gables at each end and a dividing wall running down the middle. Segmental-arched windows are located at one level, with round windows in the gables. The western section features a dado of brown glazed tiles and gauges fixed to one wall, along with a travelling crane from East Ferry Road Engineering Works, Millwall, dated 1912. The eastern section contains smithy hearths and a main chimney that rises through the roof. This chimney, approximately 42 meters high, has a square section and tapers to a corbelled band with a massively-corbelled ring.

The south range was used for boilers and steam engines and also has two gables at each end, each with 3 bays. It features segmental arched windows at ground level, circular openings in the gables, and a partial basement for servicing the plant. Several windows still have their original wooden multi-pane frames. The engine beds, made of concrete and granite blocks, remain even though the machinery has been removed. Short cast-iron pipes are attached vertically to the walls at regular intervals. The hydraulic accumulator tower, which once stood at the north of the building, has been demolished.
