Description

Porthkerry Methodist Church is a building constructed from brown stone with bathstone dressings and slate roofs, designed in the late Perpendicular style. The main entrance front features a central bay marked by two large polygonal buttresses that rise into spirelets adorned with cusped arcading and a floral band. At the gable apex, there is a floral finial, and a large 7-light window with Perpendicular tracery is prominently displayed. The entrance doorway has a cusped 4-centred arch, with ogee-headed panelling above and a finial. Flanking the doorway are two 2-light windows featuring foiled reticulated tracery, each topped with an ogee arch. The outer bays have hipped roofs and diagonal buttresses, a band of floral relief at the eaves, a 2-light Perpendicular window on the first floor, and an entrance doorway with a 4-centred arch and panelling with cusped arcading above. The sides of the church contain four bays with tall 2-light Perpendicular windows, and gabled transepts with diagonal buttresses and 4-light Perpendicular windows. The rear of the church includes a projecting organ chamber.

Inside, the church is spacious yet simple, featuring early 16th-century style details. There is a three-centred arch with a finial leading to the organ chamber, wooden panelled steps, and smaller similar arches to the vestries on either side of the organ. The side bays are supported by polygonal colonettes with floral capitals. The roof is arch-braced with thin timbers, ceiled at collar level and boarded, and there is a shallow gallery at the front.
