Description

The Pheasant is a two-storey, two-unit house built of rubble sandstone, featuring a slate roof and end stone stacks with moulded caps, one of which projects on a corbel table. Originally, it had a three-window front with three-light mullioned windows and hood moulds, but a fourth window was added above the porch when the other upper storey windows were replaced with concrete in the late 20th century. The lower storey has two larger four-light windows to the right of the porch, which were inserted into earlier openings, and a three-light window to the left of the porch. The porch itself is a 19th-century brick lean-to that was formerly rendered. The right gable end contains a three-light mullioned window in the upper storey.

Attached to the left gable end is a dairy and bakehouse lean-to, which has recently had openings added to its lateral wall and a blocked doorway at the front. At the rear, there is a centrally-placed shallow stair turret and a gabled bay to the left with an end stone stack. There are also single-storey additions to the rear from the 20th century.

Inside, an original masonry partition wall remains in part but has been cut through to create a single room, which now serves as the main bar of the public house. The main unit on the left features a joist beam ceiling with two cross beams supported on corbels in the rear wall, while the smaller unit on the right has two spine beams. The ceilings in both units are plastered between the joists, and the unit on the right includes a renewed stone fireplace.
