Description

Newton Primary School comprises two separate blocks, originally serving as junior and infant departments. Both buildings are constructed of red brick with decorative blue brick patterning, diapering in two shades of red, ashlar dressings, and some yellow brick detailing, all topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring terracotta ridge tiles, mouldings, and terracotta pots on tall chimneys. Each block exhibits an asymmetrical arrangement of doors, windows, gables, chimneys, and outshuts.

The original block on the left consists of two parallel gabled wings with an attached rectangular wing to the rear. The main road-facing frontage features a central gabled bay that projects forward, displaying three stepped, long multipane windows. These windows have decorative corniced surrounds to their heads, impost courses with a circle motif, and ashlar bands to the corner piers. A pediment above bears an inscription panel reading 'Porthcawl County School,' topped with stepped coping and ventilation louvres. Original entrances are located to the side, one inscribed 'Girls and Infants' within a segmental arched doorway with a keystone, decorative spandrels, and banded pilasters featuring a circle motif to the imposts. A matching entrance for boys is located on the left side. The main ridge is distinguished by an elaborate roof ventilator with a two-bay arcade on each side, a louvred pediment, and a copper roof. All windows are tall, multipane fixed glazing with pull-down opening lights; stone sills, lintels, some surrounds, and decorative bands of ashlar are present. Brick patterning includes diamond-shaped designs in blue brick, and diapering in red. Yellow and blue brick surrounds windows at the rear.

The building to the right is composed of a central schoolroom range and gabled schoolroom cross wings on either side. The entrance on the left is inscribed 'Domestic Science and Handicraft' and incorporates a shield within a pediment above a recessed door with an overlight; it is framed by an eared architrave. A side door to the cross gable on the right represents the original Infants Entrance. A plaque inscribed 'Porthcawl Infants School 19 Dawn Dydd 15 Yw y Borel' is affixed to the gable end, below a bell. Windows are multipane sashes with deep, wide chamfered lintels, blue brick voussoirs with heavy keystones at the front, and cast iron downpipes with decorative hoppers.

A rockfaced stone roadside wall is topped with moulded brick coping; brick and stone gatepiers have octagonal caps, and replaced railings are present.

The original plan and detailing remain largely unaltered. Inside, original features include titled or planked dados, blocked tiled fireplaces, quarry tiled or woodblock floors, part-glazed doors, glazed partitions, and lowered ceilings, although corbels related to the roof trusses remain visible.
