Description

Old Henllys is a house composed of three units arranged east to west. The central unit is a typical Gower hall farmhouse featuring a large staircase outshut on the north side. To the west is a later barn unit, and to the east is a smaller additional unit. The eastern unit includes a small recent kitchen extension at the rear, facing south. The middle unit and the small eastern unit both have two storeys. The centrally attached staircase outshut projects about 1 meter beneath a catslide roof. The rear kitchen extension has a flat roof that is higher than the eaves of the main structure. The building is rough-cast rendered, with a recently restored slate roof and small red-brick chimneys at each end.

At the front of the house, which faces north, the rough-cast render has been recently restored and extended to cover the front of the west unit as well. There are two small square upper windows of the casement type, a small 9-pane sash window at landing level in the outshut, and small rectangular windows below, with the left one being a fixed light. The front features a boarded door. The recent restoration of the rough-cast render has obscured the distinction between the three units, but the end of the middle unit on the left still appears as a slight buttress next to the main door.

The rear elevation has three windows, excluding the modern kitchen extension; the two upper windows are 19th-century four-pane casements, and the middle window below is a 4-pane sash window. The barn unit to the west, situated on rising ground, is constructed of rubble masonry, which is still visible at the rear and side. It features three large rear buttresses and a prominent chimney in the center of the west gable, with corrugated steel sheet roofing. The front of the barn has large central boarded doors that are concealed behind steel sheeting.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported that the central hall unit has a bed alcove in the southwest corner, and its main floor beam is said to have broach stops. There is also a projecting staircase turret to the north.
