Description

This is a former shop and house dating from the 18th century, constructed of squared grey rubble stone with blue brick dressings and a slate roof with overhanging eaves. The building has yellow and blue brick end chimneys. The three-story, four-bay front has the centre two bays closely spaced. The upper floors feature windows with a cambered head within brick surrounds and slate sills, fitted with horned 6-pane sashes, the outer panes being narrower. The ground floor has a timber lintel spanning above a similar sash window with brick sides to the right. Adjacent to the sash window is a tall doorway framed by large consoles supporting a fascia with a thin cornice above. A four-panel door with a large overlight leads into the property. The left two bays display a shopfront framed by piers with console brackets similar to those on the doorway, featuring a fascia on which is painted 'W.J. Davies & Sons' between 'Drug' and 'Stores'. The shop windows have grey stone sills, and a basement with a cambered-headed entry is located below the left window. The windows have two long panes to the front, with one canted inward to the recessed shop door. All panes have cambered tops. A double half-glazed shop door with overlight provides access. A broad flight of stone steps leads to the house door, situated to the right of the basement entry. Small iron railings are set on a low retaining wall, bordering a garden in front of the right-hand window. The gable ends are windowless. A large rear wing extends from the main building. The interior has not been inspected.
