Description

These are a pair of Gothic style estate cottages, built in the 18th century. They are constructed of snecked, rock-faced sandstone with limestone dressings. The cottages have a half-hipped roof covered in patterned tiles, with overhanging eaves and four gabled dormers, each featuring trefoil openings and louvres. A central ridge stack, partially renewed in brick, rises from the roof, with further stepped stone stacks behind to the right and left.

The front elevation features a pair of cross-gables which project forward in the centre. These have 3-light mullioned windows on the ground floor, with blind trefoil-headed lights in the lower portion, and paired lancet windows with a hood mould above. Narrow, louvered openings are found in the gable ends. A deep, moulded plat band runs along the left side of the cross gables, above a lean-to canopy supported by timber posts. A doorway is located to the right of the canopy, with a boarded door and a two-pane overlight, set beneath a lancet head with a hood mould. Above the doorway is a 3-light mullioned window with cusped heads. To the right of the cross-gables is a boarded door with a two-pane overlight, under a 2-centre head with a hood mould, and above the door is a 2-light mullioned window. A canted bay window is positioned to the right, featuring a central detached red sandstone shaft with a moulded capital and sash windows. A shallow, one-storey projection with weathered coping is on the right end wall, featuring a 2-light window in the upper storey. A similar canted bay window is on the left end wall, above a 2-light mullioned window.

The rear elevation displays paired gablets in the center, each with a 2-light mullioned window on the first floor, offset to the centre, and above a door and window on the lower storey. Lower, advanced cross-gables flank the central gablets, with a single-light window in the upper storey and a single-light window in the side wall of the lower storey. Low walls extend from the outer angles of the cross-gables, defining a yard behind, with sheds built as lean-tos against a rubble stone outer wall, which incorporates narrow breathers in dressed surrounds.

Inside, a small entrance hall contains an open-well staircase with square, chamfered newels and balusters. There are two main rooms on the ground floor and three bedrooms on the upper floor. Pine panelled doors are used throughout the property. The upper floor incorporates stone fireplaces with simple, stop-chamfered surrounds.
