Description
5 Pont-y-bryn-hurt is a cottage built in the mid-19th century, featuring one-and-a-half storeys and three windows, with the central windows offset to the right. A former wash house is set forward on the right, creating an L-plan but only joined at the angle. The cottage is constructed from snecked sandstone with a slate roof and has coursed, rock-faced stacks to the right, left, and right of the center. The lower-storey windows consist of two-light casements, with a larger central window, all under prominent sandstone lintels. The door to the left of center has been replaced but is also under a similar lintel. The half dormers feature similar casements but with thinner lintels. The rear of the house is cement rendered where a former lean-to was located, and it has a sash window in the upper storey and a casement window below.
The wash house has rubble stone walls that slightly batter, a mid-19th century slate roof, and rock-faced stacks on both the right and left, with the right stack cut down. In the lower storey, there are three two-light casements under stone lintels, with the central window having previously been a doorway. The upper storey contains two half-dormers added in the mid-19th century, made of snecked stone, featuring similar windows but with thinner lintels. The right gable end has blocked narrow breathers from a former barn, and the gable has been rebuilt in snecked stone. Behind the wash house, there is a lower one-and-a-half storey projection offset to the south side and flush with the gable end of the wash house. This projection is made of snecked stone facing the road and rubble stone elsewhere, with a slate roof. The gable end features shuttered openings in the lower storey and gable beneath stone lintels. The rear of the wash house has a half dormer above a boarded door with strap hinges and a two-light casement to its left, all under rock-faced lintels.
The wash house was not inspected during the survey in August 1997, but it is reported to contain original fittings.
