Description

Llan Wysg is a house of almost cruciform plan, dating from the mid-19th century. It comprises two storeys with an attic and cellar, rendered in stucco beneath slate roofs and without surviving chimney stacks.

The front elevation features an offset projecting gabled bay to the right, with the main façade to the left containing two sash windows to the east of the bay and one to the west. To the left of the western window is a small four-pane window in an architrave with a six-pane cellar window below. The projecting gable has round-arched lights with keystones—three lights to the first floor and two to the attic—with rusticated pilaster strips to the ground floor. A single-storey flat-roofed porch (now with a uPVC conservatory built against it) adjoins this bay. The original porch entrance survives inside and consists of three stepped round-arched openings with keystones, approached by stone steps. The central opening has a fluted doorcase with overlight, and the porch sides contain twelve-pane hornless sashes in architraves.

Architectural detailing throughout includes wide boarded eaves continuing across gable ends to create pediment treatment, a string course at first-floor level moulded to the front and east end, and angle pilasters incorporating blind arches at first-floor level. The mid-19th-century fenestration comprises hornless sash windows in architraves generally: twelve-pane to the ground floor and nine-pane to the first floor.

The east gable end displays three round-arched lights to the first floor and two to the attic, matching the front elevation. At ground-floor level is a flat-headed tripartite window with plain glazed sashes, each light having a keystone linked by a dripstone. A plain cellar window is also present. The west gable end contains a small sash to the attic storey, with a flat-roofed garage projecting westwards at ground level, probably a surviving part of the original structure.

The rear elevation features an in-line canted bay with fifteen-pane sashes to the ground floor (one replaced by a casement window) and nine-pane sashes to the first floor. A cross-gable above incorporates iron railings above the eaves, creating a balcony accessed through an opening in the gable with a round-arched glazed door and multi-pane window. Fenestration to the left and right of the rear wing matches the front without architraves. A twentieth-century gabled roof dormer projects to the left. The ground slopes away to the north, and there is a high plinth to the cellar lit by windows in semi-circular openings. French doors lead into the basement on the right side of the rear wing.

The interior features a large stair hall accessed through front double panelled doors in a moulded doorcase with a fan light containing coloured glass, flanked by side windows. The imperial stairs consist of two flights of curved sweeping stairs flanking the entrance, leading to a landing and then one flight to the first floor. The side walls follow the stairs' profile and feature wainscot panelling. The stairs have swept handrails and two plain balusters per tread, with decorated coving and billets to the ceiling. The dining room lies to the right of the hall and is very large with decorative coving and ceiling rose. The lounge occupies the rear canted bay, and the kitchen lies to the left. The kitchen features a raised octagonal dome in the ceiling. Panelled doors and shuttered windows occur throughout the interior.
