Description
This is a country house, likely dating to the 18th century, with subsequent additions and alterations. The exterior is rendered in white-painted stucco, accented by paired brackets supporting slate roofs with deep eaves. The east front features a two-storey, three-bay original section in the centre, with roughcast end-wall stacks. Large twelve-pane sashes are present, along with a central door recessed within a substantial stucco porch built in 1898. The porch is characterized by its outer columns on pedestals supporting a deep frieze and cornice, which incorporates mutules, one of which is dated 1898. The porch itself is filled with wide, double, half-glazed doors, side lights, and top lights, accompanied by glazing on the sides.
To the right of the original section is a projecting addition with a slightly higher eaves line and a hipped roof. This addition has a first-floor tripartite hornless sash window with a 4-8-4-pane configuration and a ground floor tripartite plate glass sash with a cornice on moulded consoles. To the left is an addition dating to approximately 1830, characterized by a rectangular form with recessed quarter-round curves at the southeast and southwest angles and matching brackets to flat eaves. The east side of this addition has a first-floor square six-pane sash, while the south end has two similar windows overlooking large French windows, and the west side features a matching six-pane sash above a similar French window.
A contemporary veranda extends around the entire house and continues across the west front of the original section. The veranda is intricately constructed with trellis work, including trellised uprights and cambered heads with sunburst bars in the spandrels. The veranda roof is glazed over the two south windows, with slate elsewhere, curving to follow the angled corners. Stone paving is laid within the veranda. The original west front mirrors the east front with three bays, roughcast end-wall stacks, and similar eaves. A simple half-glazed door with an overlight is centrally positioned. The slate roof tiles are exceptionally large. A single-storey service range extends north from the north end, featuring a tall stuccoed ridge chimney. The service court is screened from the east entrance front by a curving rubble stone wall of squared stone, incorporating an arched niche.
Inside, the entrance hall occupies two-thirds of the original front range and includes a plain chimney-piece on the south wall and a ceiling border of square mutules separated by panels. A broad recess with a basket arch on pilasters is found on the west wall, to the left of the doorway leading to the west range; the doorway is fitted with a six-panel door. Panelled shutters are also present. The study to the north features a six-panel door, a similar chimney-piece, and a cornice decorated with ribboned fasces and vine motifs. The added drawing room is a notably fine and unusual space, nearly oval in shape, with a fireplace on the north wall. The room is characterised by a moulded plaster cornice featuring a thick bead-and-reel moulding and a Greek revival ceiling border, complemented by a swirled acanthus ceiling rose. The fireplace itself is constructed from marble, accented by moulded piers and paterae roundels above. The room also incorporates very fine late 19th-century fireplace tiles designed by William de Morgan, and a large gilded overmantel mirror. Four six-panel doors are symmetrically arranged, and there is an elliptical-arched recess on the east wall. The north-end dining room has a grey marble fireplace and six-panel doors. A plain room is situated on the west front.
