Description

Old House at Cilfaenor is a two-and-a-half storey house built of rubble sandstone, featuring a corrugated iron roof and a stone stack on the left side. The front has two windows with a pentice, and the openings are offset to the right. In the upper storey, the right window retains one diamond mullion, while sockets indicate that both upper-storey windows originally had diamond mullions, with the left being a 6-light and the right a 4-light. The lower storey has boarded-up windows on both sides under timber lintels, along with a central boarded door, also under a lintel, with all ground-floor openings featuring hood moulds. The right gable end has a shuttered attic opening, and the left gable end has the ground at first-floor level with an inserted door on the right. At the rear, there is a continuous lean-to with stone tiles beneath corrugated iron sheets, and a later implement store is attached to the right.

The house has a traditional sub-medieval plan consisting of a hall and two small inner rooms. The hall features front and rear doors that face each other, along with chamfered cross-beams that have stepped run-out stops; some beams have been replaced with machine-sawn timber. A post-and-panel partition once had two doorways, but the details are now lost. There is a stone staircase to the right of the fireplace, and to the left of the stack on the first floor, there is a stone stair leading to the attic, which has been cut through to provide access to the upper level doorway in the gable end. The attic floorboards have been removed, and the roof includes chamfered tie beams and raking queen posts.
