Description
Nos 44 and 45 High Street Inferior are a pair of shops with living accommodation above, built in the 19th century. The buildings are three stories high and feature a three-window front that is rendered, with end pilaster strips. They have a slate roof with bracketed eaves. The second floor has nine-pane sash windows, while the first floor has 12-pane sash windows. The rear elevation facing Church Lane also has three windows.
No. 44 has a good 20th-century replica of a 19th-century shop front, based on old photographs. The doorway is set back between display windows and features two camber-headed lights, along with a casing of pilasters, fascia, and cornice.
Inside No. 44, it is said that behind modern boarding there is an early 17th-century armorial stone panel dated 1622. The building also has a large early 19th-century well stair with stair rods, panelled doors, reeded cornices, and contemporary chimney pieces.
