Description

6 and 8 Tower Street are a group of early 18th-century buildings, originally a row of ten, with subsequent alterations. The facades are varied, with some stucco and roughcast, whitewashed plaster first floors, and others exhibiting a more traditional appearance. Numbers 4 and 7 are emphasised as advanced pavilions, with number 4 further highlighted by a pedimented cross-gable. The buildings have slate roofs with boarded eaves and chimney stacks of both brick and cement render. The windows are recessed 12-pane sashes throughout, with a single-pane sash window replacing a former arched doorway at number 3. Original arched entrances, incorporating keystones, are present at numbers 4 to 7, leading to four-panel doors at numbers 1, 3 and 7, and a five-pane fanlight at number 4. Number 7 has a corner frontage with a chamfered corner, leading to a three-window dry-dash front for number 8. Number 49 features deep pilasters on the ground floor, and a large shop window.
