Description

The attached canal-side building at Richards Farm Bridge is a notable structure from the early 19th century, associated with the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, which was promoted in 1792 to connect the upper Usk valley to the Monmouthshire Canal. Construction of the canal began in 1797, with various engineers involved over the years, and it played a crucial role in transporting trade goods like iron, lime, and coal.

The building is located at the south-west corner of the bridge and is constructed of rubble, positioned at right angles to the canal. It features two storeys on the south side and includes a stable and a store, with a boarded loft door. The roof is corrugated, and there is a modern lean-to on the south side. The presence of straight joints suggests that the building was constructed in two stages, and the thickness of the back wall may indicate it was adapted from an earlier limekiln bank.

This building is listed for its special interest as a surviving early 19th-century structure associated with the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal.
