Description
Carreg Cennen Castle is a historic castle built from rubble stone with some ashlar dressings. It features a square inner ward that includes a northern gatehouse, a round northwest tower, a rounded northeast tower, and a chapel tower located at the center of the eastern side. The southern and western sides of the castle rise steeply from the cliff. The two-storey hall range is positioned against the eastern wall, which was the first part constructed. This was soon followed by the Barbican in front of the gatehouse and a flight of steps leading up from the east, and shortly thereafter, the Outer Ward extending to the north and east.
Access to the Barbican is via a series of steps that include drawbridges leading to the square tower, which has a drawbridge over the ditch to the gatehouse. The gatehouse is double-towered with spurred bases on the half-octagonal towers and consists of three storeys. The northwest tower features an upper floor that may have only been accessible from a wall-gallery, while the northeast tower has a vaulted ground floor. The eastern side contains the main rooms, with storage on the ground floor, a kitchen, a hall, and a solar above. A mural stair from the hall leads up to the chapel located at the second floor level within the square eastern tower.
The curtain walls to the west and south are present, with the western wall being badly ruined and the southern wall preserved to full height. The southwest corner is curved but does not function as a proper tower. There is a vaulted passage from the southeast corner leading to a cave below the eastern outer ward. The defences of the Outer Ward have been significantly reduced, although a lime-kiln remains in the eastern part.
