Description
Blocks 14 and 15, known as Sphinx House and the Officers' Mess, are a group of four grey stone houses located behind a shallow garden enclosed by stone walls. Sphinx House is positioned slightly apart from the others to the northwest, while the remaining three houses are attached in a row, forming three 5-window blocks with the central block set forward and featuring higher eaves. The buildings have slate roofs with projecting eaves and are designed with 12-pane sash windows. They are two storeys tall with a basement, and the entrance floor is elevated above the Parade Ground, accessed via a small raised garden with stone retaining walls and double stone stairs, which are flanked by stone piers and iron railings. The first floors are faced with ashlar and have decorative bands at the first floor levels and at the eaves, while the ground floors, garden walls, and steps are rusticated. Each house has a central stone doorway with a bracketed cornice supported by consoles and a rectangular overlight. Sphinx House features a modern porch.
